Movie: Utama
On Friday, Nov. 3, it is possible to enjoy the cinema in C. Nieuw-Vennep. At 8 p.m., the film starts.
Utama opens with the stunningly beautiful image of an elderly man walking towards the sun rising golden above the mountains. This is Virginio, whose weathered face is as cracked as the earth beneath his feet. Virginio spends his days wandering the scorched plateau of the Andes Mountains in Bolivia, grazing his herd of fluffy llamas. He and his wife Sisa live without running water and without electricity. Sisa’s job is to fetch water while Virginio grazes the llamas. The problem, however, is that rain is no longer falling in the region and snow is no longer showing up on mountain peaks. The village spring has now dried up. ‘Time has grown weary,’ a friend tells Virginio to explain the drought. But the truth is that climate change is making life unbearable – not that global warming is ever talked about.
